Job Title: Wastewater Plant Laboratory Technician
Company: CITY OF GRAND ISLAND/PERS
Location: Grand Island, NE
Perform skilled and specialized tasks in the operation of the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant; assist in process control work; and perform laboratory analysis and a variety of other duties and responsibilities involved in providing Wastewater Treatment Plant services for the City.
Display honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior when dealing with internal and external customers.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable is required.
Report plant problems to upper level supervisory or management staff; consult with supervisor to convey the needs of the treatment plant.
Conduct regular inspections of the treatment plant and processes.
Assist with performing quarterly Stormwater Pollution Prevention plan sampling and reporting.
Collect water samples; perform laboratory tests on water samples.
Maintain various records; clean and maintain laboratory equipment; notify plant maintenance staff of problems requiring their attention.
Maintain a log on laboratory results and equipment.
Collect samples; perform analysis on influent and effluent samples and other basic laboratory analysis as required.
Maintain computerized databases of information regarding operations laboratory analysis; input data needed for reporting, and produce various reports as requested.
Compute laboratory results.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Properties and characteristics of chemicals utilized in laboratory and plant operations.
Methods and techniques of chemical analysis.
Proper laboratory testing procedures.
Modern office procedures, methods and equipment, including a computer.
Operation and use of laboratory equipment.
Basic chemistry, microbiology and mathematics.
Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
Basic wastewater treatment process control procedures.
Various chemicals and microbiology used in wastewater treatment operations.
Various chemicals and microbiology used in wastewater operations.
Safe sampling, analysis, and the reporting procedures as appropriate for an Environmental Monitoring Laboratory.
Become familiar and understand the various permits required by regulatory agencies for plant operations.
Perform equipment and chemical adjustments according to equipment readings.
Recognize and troubleshoot problems relative to process operation and take necessary corrective action.
Operate a variety of plant machinery, equipment and tools relative to water and wastewater treatment.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Maintain various records, charts and logs.
Use Microsoft Word to communicate and Microsoft Excel to analyze data.
Work under strict rules and guidelines as set forth by regulatory agencies.
Test and analyze various processes occurring within the plant.
Obtain and maintain various permits required by regulatory agencies for plant operation.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Review and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Two (2) years of experience performing technical laboratory procedures in a health, water or wastewater analysis laboratory, or an appropriate combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Associate’s degree in Science or at a minimum, college courses specifically relating to chemistry, biology and/or microbiology.
License or Certification:
Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, an appropriate, valid Nebraska driver’s license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class IV Wastewater Operator’s license within 18 months of hire date.
Position will start at the entry level of the City’s salary table. Consideration may be given if experience exceeds entry level qualifications.
Tuesday-Friday- 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Saturday- 7:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Schedule is subject to change upon department needs.
