Technician II

Section of Horticulture, School of Integrative Plant Science

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

Ithaca, NY

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a pioneer of

purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University s second

largest population of students, faculty and staff. We work across

disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through

world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we

probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns:

natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources;

and social, physical and economic well-being.

The Drinkwater lab at Cornell University seeks an energetic,

responsible person for a research technician position. Our research

investigates the mechanisms governing plant-microbial interactions and

carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycling in agroecosystems. We work at

scales ranging from the rhizosphere, where plant-microbial

interactions dominate, to the field and landscape scale, where human

interventions interact with biotic and abiotic factors to strongly

influence ecosystem processes.

The work will focus on two main projects, one characterizes ecosystem

service outcomes from perennial grass-legume cover crops, the second

investigates the effects of plant genetics, environment and symbiotic

partnerships on nitrogen fixation in annual cover crops commonly used

as green manures in organic vegetable systems.

This is a 10 month term appointment (thought 9/30/2020); extension is

contingent upon successful performance & availability of funding.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school Diploma and up to 2 years relevant experience or

equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience with basic laboratory instruments (pH meter,

centrifuge, micro-balance) and willing to learn new laboratory

skills.

  • Possess basic skills necessary for field sample collection (soil

sampling, biomass measurements) and ability to ID common weeds

found in annual cropping systems of the region.

  • Knowledge and experience with stable isotope methodologies,

agroecological research and at least some of the soil analytical

methods commonly used in our laboratory.

  • Excellent verbal and written skills are essential. Must be able to

communicate effectively within a research team environment.

  • Must possess excellent organizational skills and attention to

detail, and must be responsible, personable, proactive, and able

to multi-task and work with moderate supervision.

programs and demonstrate knowledge of basic data management

skills.

  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State

drivers license and be willing to travel on occasion.

  • Able to lift 30 pounds and conduct field work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. /B.A in environmental, soil or agricultural science with 1-2

years of experience with agricultural research, or equivalent

combination of education and experience

  • Familiarity with protocols commonly used in the lab including

particulate organic matter fractionation, soil biological activity

incubations and stable isotope/15N natural abundance methodologies

  • Some experience and to be familiar with experiential approach to

adult education.

  • Experience interacting with undergraduates in a research setting
