Director, Global Health Family Planning Innovation Program

The Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Global Health at the University of Washington are recruiting a full-time (100% FTE) Director of a new Global Health Family Planning, Innovation Program. This faculty position will be at the Associate or full Professor with tenure rank. The successful applicant must qualify for an appointment to the full-time faculty position at the University of Washington at the Associate or Full Professor level commensurate with qualifications.

The goal of this new program is to bring together clinicians and researchers from across the University of Washington’s schools and colleges to develop a premier program that will catalyze highly interdisciplinary research, education, and training and will support innovation in contraception, family planning and abortion and the translation of innovations in those areas to large-scale, evidence-based programs and policies around the globe. The program represents an important new collaborative initiative between the Departments of Global Health and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Washington. This Program will bring together faculty, staff, and students from the two departments, and across the University of Washington campus more broadly, to catalyze exciting new work related to contraception, family planning and abortion. The program builds on substantial successful investments already realized by the University of Washington in these areas of scholarship.

The School of Public Health is ranked in the top 10 globally, with internationally-recognized programs in a number of topic areas

The Department of Global Health (DGH) is one of the premier Global Health Programs in the world. Housed jointly in the Schools of Medicine and Public Health, with a mandate to harness the expertise of all 16 UW schools and colleges, the department’s 75 core and nearly 400 affiliated faculty use highly interdisciplinary approaches to work with colleagues in more than 130 countries to improve health, reduce health disparities, and build sustainable health system capacity. The Department’s major research, educational, and capacity-building programs focus on a broad range of health issues, including several with strong, synergistic links to family planning and reproductive health such as HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and other infectious diseases; women’s, adolescents’ and children’s health; drug safety; mental health; health impacts of climate change; and health systems strengthening and program delivery. The Department’s research programs, which total over $110 million/year in grant and contract funding, span from interdisciplinary laboratory-based investigation, through multi-center clinical trials, to program evaluation and implementation science.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has over 70 faculty with a very strong Family Planning Division. The department has a top 10 Ob/Gyn residency program and fellowship training programs in Family Planning, Gynecologic Oncology and Maternal Fetal Medicine. The department has major research foci in cancer genetics, cancer immunology, immunologic impacts of obesity, preterm delivery, HIV acquisition and mucosal immunity of contraception. The Department has long-term collaborative relationships with the Department of Global Health, including multi-investigator projects in mobile health applications for prenatal and adolescent contraception and joint faculty appointments. Other research programs focus on implementation science to optimize cervical cancer prevention and HPV vaccination. The main foci of research for the division of Family Planning are efficacy and safety of contraception and abortion in high risk populations, management of early pregnancy loss, acceptability and benefit of fetal tissue research for women receiving care for abortion or early pregnancy loss, and the influences of contraception on the vaginal microbiome. The Family Planning division focuses its clinical and advocacy efforts on increasing access to contraception and abortion for all Washingtonians.

Outside of the Departments of Global Health and Obstetrics and Gynecology, the University of Washington has strong, cross-campus, multidisciplinary collaborative science related to contraception, family planning, and abortion, including male contraceptive research and development in the Department of Medicine, the Department of Epidemiology, and the Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology, among others.

The successful applicant will have an active program of scholarship related to contraception, family planning, and/or abortion, a strong publication record, and mentoring experience appropriate to rank. Administrative experience and a track record of inter-disciplinary partnerships to take advantage of the outstanding opportunities for collaboration at the University of Washington are desired. Applicants from within and outside of academia are encouraged.

Applicants must have an MD or PhD degree (or foreign equivalent) with a clinical and/or research focus in family planning and global health. In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-US) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. The successful applicant must qualify for appointment to the full-time faculty at the University of Washington at the Associate or Full Professor level commensurate with qualifications.
